Mutual & Federal would like to extend congratulations and best wishes to all the winners acknowledged during the 2005 Mutual & Federal SA Cricket Awards banquet on 18 May 2005. Well done to all of you!

A total of 29 awards covering both professional and amateur cricket were presented on the evening.

The main award – the
”Mutual & Federal Player of the Year”

was presented to Makhaya Ntini.

Not only did Makhaya walk away with the “Mutual & Federal SA Cricketer of the Year”, but also the “Castle Lager/MTN Test Cricketer of the Year” and “SA Players’ Player of the Year”. Congratulations Makhaya!

About Makhaya:

Makhaya Ntini continues to be the leading strike bowler in the South African attack. As the fittest man in the squad, and probably in World cricket, Ntini’s passion for bowling and taking wickets is remarkable. He likes to set himself goals before each series and more often than not exceeds them. However, not even he would have dreamt that he would not only become the second South African bowler to take 200 Test wickets, but that he would carve his name in South African Test history by taking 13 for 132 and carry South Africa to a famous victory in the second Test against the West Indies in Trinidad.

All told, Makhaya took 58 Test wickets and up to the start of the West Indies series had taken 24 ODI wickets. He also moved to a career high fourth place in the LG ICC World Test rankings.

Born in Mdingi, near King William’s Town, he is an inspiration to all aspiring cricketers, not only just for his dedication and hard work but increasingly for his thoughtful, mentally incisive approach to the game. He is an icon in South African cricket and remains one of the leading role models in the country.

Reach for a Dream Foundation:

At the banquet, Bruce Campbell, managing director of Mutual & Federal, presented an autographed memento and cheque to the value of R20 000 to the Reach for a Dream Foundation. The money was raised when outgoing 2004 Cricketer of the Year Jacques Kallis went to bat for the charity. Mutual & Federal sponsored him to the tune of R10 for every run scored during the summer series against England.

Big-hitting Kallis knocked a total of 1536 runs in a batting performance that proved to be one of the highlights of a memorable summer.

Bruce commented: “The Reach for a Dream Foundation uses the inspirational power of dreams to give children a lift in their fight against life-threatening diseases. Our cricketers often give up their time to assist this worthy cause and we knew we could depend on Jacques to put in a great ‘claim’ on their behalf. Meeting claims is core-competence for Mutual & Federal. We were delighted to make out this particular cheque.”
