·      Combustible material should be kept away from heating appliances;

·         Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children;

Things to consider :

v     Is your house address number clearly visible from the street?

This will enable emergency services to locate your home easily, thereby allowing them quick access to your home.

v     Does your home have a smoke detector or fire extinguisher installed where it is easily

accessible?

Kitchen fires are frequent occurrences in houses. Make sure you know how to operate the extinguisher and that it is in proper working order. Make sure that it is serviced regularly.

v     Does your family have an escape plan?

Make sure your family practises exit drills in the house. Escape windows and doors should be easily accessible and must be opened easily.

v    Are emergency telephone numbers visibly posted near the phone?

We recommend telephones be installed in the bedroom as many emergencies occur while people are sleeping. Quick access to a telephone can be crucial.
