Interview Hints & Tips

We’ve put together some useful tips and suggestions to help you prepare for your job interview and make it a success!

  • Conduct research on the company. It will help to establish if you will fit in with the company’s culture, vision and mission, and also let the employer know that you really want to be part of the company.

  • Try to integrate your knowledge of the company into your answers.

  • Ensure that you dress formally.  It is also best to wear dark or neutral colours, for example black, navy blue.

  • Be on time. To be on the safe side, try to arrive 20 minutes before for your interview, and if you run into any problems along the way, like traffic, let the interviewer know.

  • Know the name and surname of the person that you will be meeting.

  • Smile, and give a firm handshake when greeting.

  • Try to establish a good rapport or relationship with your interviewer. Be casual but professional and, most importantly, be yourself!

  • Market your skills and related experience in the field you are applying for during your interview. Be sure to do it in a way that is positive and not arrogant.

  • Be alert and interested at all times and listen carefully to what the interviewer is saying.

  • Maintain good eye contact as it shows confidence and integrity.

  • Most companies conduct competency based interviews, where a few job specific competencies are evaluated as part of the interview. These questions should be answered in a scenario-based format where a clear situation, action and result can be established. To make a success of this, be sure to use situations you’ve found yourself in previously. You can research further on how best to answer competency based questions on the following website or you can Google “Competency Based Interviews”

  • Allow your interviewer to raise the topic of salary first.

  • Prepare a shortlist of questions regarding the specified job or department and Company.

  • Respectfully ask when you can expect feedback on the interview and what the recruitment process is further.

  • Thank the interviewer for their time and the opportunity afforded to you to attend the interview.
